We’ve made a special effort to protect your privacy

This site is built with privacy in mind. For this reason, we favour our own implementation of services over third party solutions, in order to preserve your privacy. This includes in-house implementation of:

  • Newsletter services (your email addresses are safe with us and not hosted with third party newsletter delivery systems).
  • Social network sharing buttons (the typical solutions would otherwise share your internet activity with the likes of Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
  • Analytics and statistical metrics are made by our own implementation of an open-source software rather than using a third party service. The common solution is Google Analytics, which can permit Google to follow users across the web, that’s why we use our own implementation of an open-source software called Matomo instead.

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

Newsletter

If you sign up to receive a newsletter then your email address is saved indefinitely. Your email address is used by us to send you each new edition of the newsletter.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

A functional cookie is used by the site to remember what cookies and scripts you have enabled or blocked. Without it, the site would repeatedly ask you if you would like to enable or block cookies and scripts.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

YouTube is an example of such a service.

Statistical Metrics & Analytics

This helps us to gauge visitor interests and use of the website. This is how we can tell which articles are most read, which are overlooked, and how many people visit the website on a given day.

We use Matomo to record and manage statistical analysis of user and visitor access.

Your IP address is anonymised (we mask 2 bytes of your address).

Not only is this data anonymised, it’s managed by us, so nothing is shared with third parties like Google.

Data collected

We collect information that’s typically made available via your browser, device, and servers. Such as IP address (anonymised), device type, language preference, browser type, operating system, date and time of access.

Matomo tracks the following:

  • Anonymised user IP address
  • Date and time of the request / visit
  • Title of the page being viewed (Page Title)
  • URL of the page being viewed (Page URL)
  • URL of the page that was viewed prior to the current page (Referrer URL)
  • Screen resolution being used
  • Time in local user’s timezone
  • Files that were clicked and downloaded
  • Links to an outside domain that were clicked (Outlink)
  • Pages generation time (the time it takes for webpages to be generated by the webserver and then downloaded by the user: Page speed)
  • Location of the user: country, region, city, approximate latitude and longitude (Geolocation)
  • Main Language of the browser being used
  • User Agent of the browser being used

From the User-Agent, we use our Universal Device Detection library to detect the browser, operating system, device used (desktop, tablet, mobile, tv, cars, console, etc.), brand and model.

Some information is also stored in first party cookies and then collected by Matomo:

  • Random unique Visitor ID
  • Time of the first visit for this user
  • Time of the previous visit for this user
  • Number of visits for this user

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Please send an email to nima@malekidispatch.com with requests and questions.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments and any emails sent to website administrators may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Your contact information

We only have your email address if you have willingly provided it to us by posting a comment, by sending us an email, or by signing up for a newsletter.

You can unsubscribe from newsletters at any time and request that your comments be deleted.

Please send an email to nima@malekidispatch.com with requests and questions.
